Excellent experience!! The camp sites are oversized, heavily shaded, really clean. We were right by the river, camping with two small grandsons. We had a great time!! Fawn Lakes are a short walk through the woods. We are going back this year, but won't be camping (staying in town). Had to promise the grandsons we would picnic and fish at Fawn Lakes one whole day. Wonderful trip, can't wait to go back.
If I could give this campground 0 stars, I would. The reason my family, friends, and I were so dissatisfied was a direct result of the hosts. Dennis, the male host, approached a friend of ours in an irate, threatening manner and screamed at her, while shaking his finger at her, "No one wants to hear your barking dog! You better do something about that dog or you will be kicked out of here!!!" My friend's father attempted to diffuse the situation but Dennis was not going to back off. Dennis then called the police and the police did show up to attempt to diffuse the situation to no avail. Earlier that same day I asked the hosts if we could reserve our space for one more day. Both hosts were very accommodating and offered the spot next to ours for one more night. We agreed and thought we had one more night there at the campground. However, after the incident that occurred later that night with our friend, we were notified by the hosts on our final day that we would not be allowed to stay in the space next to us (even if we paid for it) and that we would have to leave. Dennis and his wife/female companion were incredibly rude to us for the remainder of our stay there at this campground. I am absolutely disgusted with the type of people you allow to host at our national campgrounds and sincerely hope you find some decent people to replace Dennis and his female companion.
Reserved a spot then was told when we arrived after an 8 hour drive that the forest service closed down a part of the campground that we had reserved. No one bothered to contact us and let us know. Awesome....
One of several developed Forest Service Campgrounds on the Red River between the villages of Red River and Questa. Accessible via NM 38, the park is located on the south side of the road approximately 2 miles west of Red River. Fairly open campsites along the small Red River with trails to a pair of nearby ponds, the "Fawn Lakes." Like the other parks along the Red River, Fawn Lakes is HEAVILY used during the summer months--so be advised. While services, such as water and restrooms, are closed during the winter months, the campsites themselves can be used for free, providing prospective campers do not mind humping their gear up from the highway (50-150 yards)
Great place to camp.
